REMINDER: EAST BOUND CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR THE I-264 BERKLEY BRIDGE THIS WEEKEND Motorists should use the Midtown Tunnel, Cam

NORFOLKVirginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will close the I-264 Berkley Bridge east bound today, Friday, May 14, at 8 p.m. through Monday, May 17, at 5 a.m. to begin work on the eastbound span of the Berkley Bridge. The Route 58 Midtown Tunnel and the Campostella Bridge are the suggested alternate routes to travel into downtown Norfolk during the closure. For motorists traveling to Virginia Beach, the I-64 High Rise Bridge is the suggested alternate route.

After completing the work on the westbound bridge in May, crews will now begin replacing the eastbound bridge decks. This work will require closure of the eastbound bridge span to motorists. The multi-use footpath for pedestrians and bicyclists along the east side of the bridge span will also be inaccessible.

The extensive bridge deck replacement project requires that the four separate bridge decks are lifted out by crane, new forms laid, welded in place, and then filled with concrete. This weekend will be the third of a total of four scheduled weekend closures.

The final bridge closure is scheduled Friday, June 4, though Monday, June 7. In case of weather delays, Friday, June 18, through Monday, June 21 has been scheduled. This closure will not be necessary, of course, if the work is completed the weekend of June 4.
