PHOTO-SAFE COMES TO NEWPORT NEWS

Newport News will soon be participating in Photo-Safe, a program designed to reduce the number of accidents at key intersections. Photo-Safe uses cameras at selected intersections to assist in traffic signal enforcement.

The intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Boulevard will be the first of three Newport News intersections expected to be equipped with the cameras. Personnel from the Police Department will be available for interviews from 11:00 A.M. until noon on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the intersection as the cameras are being installed.

Once the installation is complete, and the cameras activated, there will be a 30-day warning period during which a warning notice will be sent to the registered owners of vehicles violating the red traffic signal.  After the 30-day warning period, violation notices will be sent to the vehicle owners charging a $50 civil fine.

It should be noted that this program is not designed to provide additional income to the City, rather as an effort to reduce traffic crashes.

Additional information will be provided as the project progresses.

Interviews may be requested through the Public Information Office as the project continues.
