NEWPORT NEWS, VA, December 21, 2009

The Newport News Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire in the Ivy Farms Shopping Center in the early morning hours of Monday, December 21, 2009. The NNFD received the call at 3:04 AM, and upon arrival at 3:10 AM, the first NNFD unit found a smoke showing from the right-end of the shopping center. Fire fighters entered the structure and found that the fire had burned itself out. Salvage and overhaul operations were conducted and the scene was cleared at 6:57 AM. The fire was confined to the bar and office area of the vacant business formally known as TG’s Saloon. Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office are currently on scene and the fire is still under investigation.

The business was equipped with smoke detectors that were operational upon the NNFD’s entry. The Newport News Fire Department wants to reiterate the life saving value of properly installed and operable smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the home. The NNFD will install free smoke alarms for any Newport News homeowner. Please call the “Smoke Detector Hotline” at 926-8009 to make arrangements, or visit our web site at www.nngov.com/fire.
